Electrolytes for Children – How to Protect Your Child from Dehydration?
2023-09-17
Dehydration is the result of the loss of water and electrolytes from the body. This is especially dangerous for small children, so hydration should be started immediately after the characteristic symptoms appear. Why are electrolytes so important for the body and how can you protect your child from dehydration?
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are salt ions that occur naturally in the human body, especially in blood, plasma, and tissue fluids. The most important electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. They play an important role in maintaining the balance of the entire body, which is why it is so important to protect against dehydration and loss of electrolytes.
What role do electrolytes play in a child's body?
The task of electrolytes is primarily to maintain proper water-electrolyte management and acid-base balance. Electrolytes nourish and oxygenate cells, participate in the conduction of nerve impulses, regulate muscle function and support tissue regeneration. They also have an important impact on the proper functioning of the brain, well-being and maintaining concentration. The most important electrolytes:
- potassium – coordinates the work of the heart and nervous system, and also affects the proper blood pressure,
- sodium – a component of intercellular fluid, coordinates muscle function and affects the hydration of the body0
What are the symptoms of electrolyte deficiency?
Electrolyte deficiency occurs when there are insufficient salt ions in the body. The symptoms of this condition are primarily:
- muscle tremors and spasms,
- swelling,
- dizziness and headaches,
- weakness and drowsiness,
- irritability,
- general feeling of being unwell,
- too little urine output,
- constant desire,
- fainting,
- noticeable heart rhythm disturbances,
- sunken fontanelle in infants
.
Dehydration is particularly dangerous, especially in the case of small children. It occurs most quickly as a result of fever, diarrhea, vomiting, viral infections, overheating of the body or excessive physical exertion. How to protect a child from dehydration? The best way is to administer electrolytes orally. Electrolytes for children are always recommended to be administered in states of dehydration, regardless of their cause. In such cases, water and electrolyte balance disorders occur, which require supplementing the diet with glucose and minerals.
Electrolytes for children – from what age?
Powdered electrolytes can be given to children from the 1st day of life. Of course, you should choose the right product, such as Jonolit Baby, which is intended for infants from the 1st day of life and children up to 3 years of age. In the case of older children (3+), Jonolit electrolytes, which are also intended for rehydrating adults, will be the right choice. These are powdered products for preparing an oral rehydration solution with reduced osmolarity and sodium content - the composition of electrolytes is in line with the recommendations of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). To support a child's body during dehydration, in addition to replenishing electrolytes, you should also take care to prevent their further loss. In the case of acute diarrhea, high fever, excessive sweating or vomiting, remember to give the right amount of fluids.
How to dose electrolytes for children?
The dosage of electrolytes depends on body weight, age, degree of dehydration, stage of hydration and doctor's recommendations. There are two phases of electrolyte administration: hydration phase (first 4 hours) and maintenance hydration phase. Hydration should be carried out according to the instructions included in the package and according to the doctor's instructions and under his supervision.
How to give electrolytes to babies and toddlers?
Electrolytes in powder form can be purchased in sachets. Dissolve the contents of the sachet in 200 ml of warm, boiled water and then cool. For infants and children up to 2 years of age, pour the solution with a spoon directly into the mouth, in small portions every 1-2 minutes - older children can drink electrolytes from a cup. If vomiting occurs, stop hydration for 5-10 minutes and then continue at a slower pace. The solution should be consumed immediately after preparation and cooling.
Are there any contraindications to administering electrolytes?
Electrolytes should not be given to children who experience symptoms such as blood in the stool, poor renal function, hemodynamic shock, or intestinal obstruction. In the above-mentioned situations, the method of hydration should be planned by a doctor.
Can you overdose on electrolytes?

Activated carbon (carbon) – properties, use and dosage
2022-11-30
Activated carbon, also called activated and medicinal, has been used for years as an effective remedy for diarrhea. Thanks to its properties, it is also increasingly used in cosmetics, as an ingredient in face, body, hair and teeth products. Its characteristic black color distinguishes it from other preparations, and thus arouses consumer interest. How is activated carbon obtained and what properties can be attributed to it?
What is activated carbon?
What is most often emphasized by the proponents of activated carbon is its natural origin. Medicinal carbon is made from raw materials such as wood, peat, fossil coals or nut shells. It is most often obtained from wood pulp subjected to the carbonization process at 400-800°C. Then this pulp is activated, which gives the carbon strong adsorption properties. Activated carbon usually comes in the form of a black powder, and medicinal products are usually available in the form of tablets or capsules.
Activated carbon - properties and applications
Medicinal charcoal is particularly valued for its adsorption properties. This means that it is an adsorbent that has the ability to absorb toxins and impurities - for example from the digestive system. This is why it is so effective in treating diarrhea, flatulence and food poisoning. Intestinal peristalsis disorders can lead to increased frequency of bowel movements and loosening of stool consistency - this occurs, among other things, as a result of bacterial and viral intestinal infections. Medicinal charcoal binds undesirable substances in the digestive tract, such as bacterial toxins, poisons, intestinal gases, protein, some medications and factors that affect intestinal peristalsis.
Preparations containing this ingredient can also be used in cases of poisoning with certain drugs – however, this requires consultation with a doctor. When it comes to medical use, activated carbon is also effective for cuts, wounds and abrasions, as it effectively absorbs wound exudate, eliminates unpleasant odour and binds bacterial endotoxins.
Activated carbon is widely used not only in medicine, but also in cosmetology. Toothpastes with activated carbon are very popular, which also has a whitening effect - this is possible thanks to its ability to adsorb other substances and abrasive properties. As an ingredient in toothpastes, carbon soothes wounds on the gums, and at the same time removes discoloration from teeth and eliminates unpleasant odor from the mouth.
It can also be found in soaps, shampoos, scrubs and face masks. Activated charcoal has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it an excellent ingredient in cosmetics for oily and acne-prone skin.
How to dose activated carbon?
When using medicinal charcoal, follow the instructions in the package leaflet. To detoxify the body and get rid of heavy metals, usually 1-2 capsules a day are used - just 1 g of activated charcoal can absorb 1.8 g of mercuric chloride. Charcoal can also be helpful in removing pesticides from the intestines, which are contained in food, such as lettuce, which easily accumulates lead and cadmium.
It is important to note that the body does not absorb activated carbon from the digestive tract, but rather it is excreted in the feces. After taking a supplement with activated carbon, the feces may turn black – this is a completely natural phenomenon that should not be worried about.
Activated carbon - contraindications
Although medicinal charcoal is a natural substance, in some cases its use is not recommended or should be consulted with a doctor. This applies especially to people with gastrointestinal obstruction, paralysis of intestinal peristalsis or suffering from persistent vomiting. Due to its adsorption properties, medicinal charcoal should not be used with other medications, as it may reduce their effect - it is best to take it 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking the medication. It is also worth noting that activated charcoal taken with a meal has a weaker effect. Before giving a charcoal supplement to a child, read the leaflet to see if the preparation is intended for children.
What to look for when choosing activated carbon?
Activated carbon supplementation should be considered – it is therefore worth paying attention to the composition of products from different manufacturers. Oleofarm activated carbon is a supplement containing carbon from natural raw materials, which is distinguished by its simple composition, without unnecessary fillers. In addition to activated carbon itself, our product contains ingredients such as cellulose (filler), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (shell component) and magnesium salts of fatty acids and silicon dioxide (anti-caking agents). Our supplement is available without a prescription and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, as it does not contain animal ingredients.
